Mazzy Star’s So Tonight That I Might See is one of those albums that feels like it just floats on. The whole thing moves with this warm, drifting glow, like a singular streetlight illuminating a stretch of oceanside highway. Hope Sandoval sounding like she’s singing from a candlelit room somewhere far away, David Roback’s guitars stretching out like desert heat. “Fade Into You” is the obvious landmark, but the deep cuts are where the record really blooms, all slow-motion, late-night atmosphere and quiet intensity. The haunting drift of “Mary of Silence,” where everything feels smoky, slow, and a little otherworldly. It’s a front-to-back mood piece that’s only gotten better with time.
